Five Crowns

Five Crowns® is a card game for the whole family. It has original game play, but uses skills that you have obtained from playing your old favorites like Hearts, Spades and Rummy. Because Five Crowns has five Royal Families—the Stars, the Clubs, the Hearts, the Spades and the Diamonds—yes, five suits in the old usage, it allows a more equal chance of making a book or a run, effectively giving each player more possibilities to readjust their hand so as to go out. The play starts with three cards and the 3s are wild; the next hand has four cards and the 4s are wild…. working up to the last hand when the Kings are wild. Each of the Royal Families is portrayed in original art and has its own colors. Five Crowns® is a fast paced, ingenious new game in eleven rounds.

Ages 8 & up

Quiddler

Quiddler® is a beautiful word game with naturally smooth game play that plays fast. These are essentials for a successful game that few word games have. Using special cards, Quiddler® draws on one’s ability to combine letters into words. Players must combine their entire hand into words trying to use the highest point value letters. Quiddler® challenges you to do this first with three cards (round one), then with four, on up to ten cards in the last round. A bonus is given for both, the longest word, and the most words made by a player in each round. The average game takes 20-40 minutes.
Although it may appear that the person who knows the most words would consistently win, this is not the case when playing Quiddler®. There is a visual perception aspect that draws on combining the cards with the highest points into the words rather than the first words a player recognizes. There is also an element of strategy. Players who win often, don’t go out at their first opportunity; on the other hand, sometimes they go out as soon as possible. Their actions are aimed at increasing their odds of getting either the longest word or the most words bonus.

The game works well for both, beginning readers and accomplished word game players. Youngsters can enjoy Quiddler® because players can win using short words. This results from the bonus for getting the most words in any round, which, of course, is obtained using short words i.e., zoo, is, of. On the other hand, accomplished word lovers are challenged because of the bonus given for the longest word in any round, as well as the aspects noted above.

The solitaire rules included with Quiddler® result in endless hours of word challenges for the single player. Although each game is quick to play (about 15-20 minutes), people have tended to play game after game.

Set Cubed

SET Cubed is A Curious Game of Clever Connections, challenging a player’s ability to identify SETs between the dice in their hand and those already on the board.  Players can play up to 3 dice per turn making as many SETs as possible. Create SETs up, down and across the board, the more SETs you create, the higher your score. As the number of dice on the board increases so do the possible SET combinations. Rack up points by using BONUS SQUARES! Roll a WILD die and unleash the possible number of SETs that can be made during your turn! How many SETs can you make?! The player with the most points wins!

Set

The family game of visual perception

SET® is a highly addictive, original game of visual perception; a fascinating challenge for either solitaire or competitive play.  To create a SET, a player must locate three cards in which each of the four features is either all the same on each card or all different on each card, when looked at individually. The four features are, symbol (oval, squiggle or diamond), color (red, purple or green), number (one, two or three) or shading (solid, striped or open).  Age is no advantage in this fast paced family game.

SET® is great fun for the whole family because there is no previous knowledge required.

1000 pc The Lady of Shalott

An 1888 painting by the English Pre-Raphaelite painter John William Waterhouse.  It shows a scene from Lord Tennyson’s 1832 poem of the same name, in which the poet describes the plight of a woman isolated in a tower near King Arthur’s Camelot.  One day she saw Sir Lancelot passing on his way in the reflection of her mirror, and dared to look out at Camelot, bringing about a curse.  The lady escaped by boat during an autumn storm by sailing towards Camelot and certain death.  Her frozen body was found by the knights and ladies of Camelot.  The tapestry she had woven during her imprisonment was found draped over the side of the boat.

1000 pc Ophelia

OPHELIA - is a painting by the English artist Sir John Everett Millais (1829 -1896), completed in 1852.  Currently held in the Tate Britain in London, it depicts Ophelia, a character from Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, singing before she drowns in a river.  The painting is known for its depiction of the detailed flora of the river and the riverbank.  The flowers shown floating on the river were chosen to correspond with Shakespeare’s description of Ophelia’s garland.  The prominent red poppy, not mentioned by Shakespeare’s description of the scene, represents sleep and death.  Ophelia has been estimated to have a market value of around 30 million Euro.

1000 pc Sunshine and Showers - At Home in Killarney

Set in the McGillycuddy Reeks on the Ring of Kerry in Ireland, this scene depicts typical rural life of the time.  James Richard Marquis was a pupil of the Royal Dublin Society’s School in 1847 and then afterwards practised as a landscape artist.  He started exhibiting at the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) in 1853; was elected an associate in 1861, and a member the following year.  A few years later he moved to London, but continued to send his pictures back to the Dublin Academy.  Towards the end of his life he married and lived mostly in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Irish watercolour painter John Faulkner was born in Dublin and studied drawing and fine art painting at the Royal Dublin School.  His precocious talent led him to begin exhibiting at the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) in 1852 when he was only 17.  He was elected an RHA academician at 26 and also exhibited at the Royal Academy (RA) in London.  Faulkner’s earliest landscape paintings depict scenes of south Co. Dublin and the Wicklow coast.  He had a particular skill at capturing the soft dampness of the Irish climate.

“The Holy Chapel” is a Gothic chapel on the Île de la Cité in the heart of Paris, France.  It was built between 1244 and 1248 and is perhaps the high point of the full tide of the rayonnante period of Gothic architecture.  The palatine chapel of the royal palace on the Île de la Cité, was built to house precious relics: Christ’s crown of thorns, the Image of Edessa and thirty other relics.  Later a piece of the True Cross and other relics were added.  The most visually beautiful aspects of the chapel, and considered the best of their type in the world, are its stained glass windows.

1000 pc Passion Flowers

The Blue Passion Flower is popular with gardeners because it attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.  The shape of the flowers has led to the plant being associated with the passion of Jesus; the three stigmas representing the three nails used to nail Jesus to the cross, the ovary and its stalk represent the chalice of the Last Supper, the five anthers the five wounds, the corona the crown of thorns, the ten ‘petals’ (actually five petals and five sepals) the apostles (save Judas the traitor and Peter the denier); old leaves represent the hands of those who persecuted Him, young leaves the lance which stabbed Him, and the tendrils the whips which beat Him.

1000 pieces, Puzzle Size: 67 X 50cm, Bonus Poster Included

1000 pc Green Man

The Green Man is a motif found in many cultures around the world.  The representation of a face surrounded by or made of leaves; it is interpreted primarily as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of growth each spring.  Perhaps a fertility God, the beneficent spirit of vegetation or a tree spirit, the Green Man motif was still being built into European churches even after 1,000 years of Christianity.  Here the artist has depicted the Green Man as the centre of the life cycle of the Oak tree.  Oak was a sacred tree for the Celts, thought to have special powers and to serve as the abode of the fairies.  In reality the oak tree supports more insect, bird and animal life than any other.  The Dagda, the powerful God of Celtic tradition, is likened to the oak, never failing to give hospitality to all who asked for it.

1000 pc Red Dragon

In the Welsh story of Lludd and Llefelys, the Red Dragon fights with an invading White Dragon.  His shrieks cause women to miscarry, animals to perish and plants to become barren.  Lludd, king of Britain, goes to his wise brother Llefelys in France for advice.  Llefelys tells him to dig a pit in the centre of Britain, fill it with mead, and cover it with cloth.  Lludd does this, and the dragons drink the mead and fall asleep.  Lludd imprisons them, still wrapped in their cloth, underground in a stone chest at Dinas Emrys in Snowdonia.

1000 pieces, Puzzle Size: 67 X 50cm, Bonus Poster Included

1000 pc Fuchsia Faerie

Although the Fuchsia plant is not native to Ireland, the hedgerows of West Cork in southern Ireland are lined with this decorative evergreen shrub with its delicate, pendulous flowers which are borne in profusion throughout the summer and autumn months.  A common sight in West Cork is a road or a “boreen” lined with these striking plants that can reach up to 10 feet high.  A less common sight however is that of the Fuchsia Fairy.  A cheeky playful creature, she looks after the plant, keeping it strong and healthy, clearing away dead leaves and ensuring it has enough water and food.

1000 pieces, Puzzle Size: 67 X 50cm, Bonus Poster Included

1000 pc Carpet Page

A carpet page is a page of pure ornament, looking rather like an oriental carpet, with brilliant colours, active lines and complex patterns.  They are commonly found in books in the Insular style, that is, the illuminated Celtic manuscripts produced in Irish and British monasteries from 600 to 900 AD.  It has been suggested that the complexity of the ornamentation in carpet pages was believed to confuse evil spirits, thus keeping safe the sacred information contained in the chapters to follow.  In this carpet page by Rachel Arbuckle, the artist has combined the geometric, angular lines of Moorish art with the softer curves and intricate interlacing of the Celts.  The central structure of the design is a cross shape which is often found in these pages, except in this case the artist has altered the proportions to suggest the four gates of the Tibetan mandala.

1000 pc The Twelve Days of Christmas

A stunning interpretation of the classic Christmas song.  It was illegal to be a Catholic in England from 1558 to 1829, so this was written as a catechism song to help young Catholics learn the basics of their faith.  The song had hidden meanings; “true love” refers to God and “me” refers to the church.  The twelve gifts also had their meanings.  The twelve drummers stood for the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostles’ Creed, eleven pipers for the eleven faithful apostles, ten lords for the ten commandments etc.  Finally a partridge in a pear tree represented Jesus Christ as a mother partridge that acts as a decoy to save her helpless chicks from predators.

1000 pc St Patrick

Patrick, who became the patron saint of Ireland, was born into a Roman ruling family in 390 AD Britain.  At the age of 14 he was enslaved by a gang of Irish raiders and spent the next 6 years as a shepherd on a mountain top in County Armagh.  A vision of ships persuaded him to escape.  He later studied for the priesthood, was made a bishop, and returned to Ireland as a missionary in 432 AD.  Many legends are told of that time; he banished all snakes (a symbol of evil) from Ireland.  The painting uses many other symbols: the shamrock (the Trinity), the harp, peacocks and angels (a calling from God).

1000 pieces, Puzzle Size: 67 X 50cm, Bonus Poster Included

1000 pc St. Brendan the Navigator

St. Brendan was born in 486 AD and founded a monastery at Clonfert, County Galway.  Brendan was said to have set sail with a handful of monks on a perilous seven-year quest across the Atlantic in a boat of wood and oxhide.  En route, legend tells us that they were raised up on the backs of “sea monsters”, they passed by “crystal columns that rose up to the sky” and they were pelted with “flaming, foul-smelling rocks”.  Eventually, the intrepid voyagers arrived at a beautiful land they called the “Promised Land of the Saints”.  It is widely believed that St. Brendan and his monks had in fact arrived in America almost 1,000 years before Colombus.

1000 pieces, Puzzle Size: 67 X 50cm, Bonus Poster Included

1000 pc Courting Peacocks

The image of the peacock can be found in many cultures and traditions.  To the Celts the peacock appeared as a symbol of beauty, paradise, rebirth, pride and the incorruptibility of the soul.  It also tells the story of the heavens and the rays of the sun.  As legend had it, the peacock’s flesh did not putrefy, so the Celts considered it a symbol of the Resurrection and everlasting life.  Hence, it is widely used throughout early Christian Celtic manuscripts as a representation of Christ.

Trying to outwit shrewd opponents, each player takes it in turns to throw the dice and then move Assam, the market organiser. If Assam lands on an opponent’s carpet, he pays the owner a fine and a new carpet is placed by the player on neighbouring spaces.

Finally, when the last carpet has been the laid, the player with the most visible carpets plus the most money is the winner.

A stunning design, Marrakech was nominated under it’s German title ‘Suleika’ for this year’s Spiel Des Jahre.

This oh-so-simple game attracts players of all ages. The apparently simple concept is innovative and the spellbinding sight of falling pieces attract children and adults alike. Winomino

Pick a pair of matching selector cards, grab your shapes, and then race your opponent to fill the space at your end of the board. Take an extra shape each, move the bar up one notch and then race to fill that space.

Take another shape! The more shapes you have the harder it gets. The genius of Winomino is that, if you start with matched cards then no matter which shape you take next there is a GUARANTEED solution (you just might never find it!).

With 900 different combination challenges, it’s enough to keep even the most avid puzzler satisfied. Great for problem solving, spatial awareness & geometry.

About The Game

Winomino is based on the maths of pentominoes that works so brilliantly in the game Katamino. There are 1,000’s of variations for filling the playing board and 2d and 3d shape challenges to complete as well.

* Highly Commended in the Science Museum Smart Toy Awards 2007
