This month’s spotlight is on Gemma, our Product and Marketing Manager. Gemma has been at Coiledspring for over three years now, and she has amassed quite the board game and puzzle collection. Known as our resident jigsaw enthusiast (she builds all the jigsaws and Wrebbit 3D models for shows), Gemma has narrowed her selection down to just five of her favourites!
What great things do you have in store for us Gemma?
Proudly made in Canada, Wrebbit 3D puzzles are some of the sturdiest puzzles on the market, made from non-toxic foam. It’s hard for me to pick my favourite one as I love them all! The first one I ever built for one of our trade shows was Downton Abbey. Sitting at an impressive piece count of 890, it was a delight to build and I received lots of compliments on it at the show!
I am a big fan of Harry Potter and absolutely love the Harry Potter collection. There’s something for everyone – from the impressive 2145 piece puzzle combining the Hogwarts Great Hall, Hogwarts Astronomy Tower and Hogwarts Clock Tower, to the newly launched Mini Collection made up of three puzzles: Flying Ford Anglia (130pc), Mini Hogwarts Express (155pc) and Mini Knight Bus (130pc). The Mini Collection is the perfect gateway to Wrebbit 3D and is perfect for Christmas presents.
In the office, we have nine puzzles displayed, and I have built eight of them. Schmidt Spiele produce some of the highest quality puzzles around – manufactured to their 6 star quality, they’re a brand you can trust. When finished, due to the snug fitting pieces, you can lift the puzzles up vertically. I have put this to the test, walking a puzzle outside for a photoshoot. It was nerve wracking, but it remained strong!
The Thomas Kinkade Disney range, in particular the two Beauty and the Beast puzzles (Beauty and the Beast and Beauty and the Beast Winter Enchantment) are my favourites of the range, though I also enjoy the colourful puzzles too. I find jigsaws incredibly relaxing and enjoy creating calm from chaos!
Continuing with my puzzle theme, 50 Clues is an escape room in a box. The Pendulum of the Dead is the first the series of the murderous ‘Leopold’ trilogy. You’ve got to work tougher to help Maria escape from the hospital to find her son, before it’s too late…
You don’t need an app to play, but you will need access to a web browser for hints and tips. While it only makes sense to play it once, the code can be activated 30 times, so you can pass it on to your friends and see how quickly they can escape.
This game does contain graphic violence, so it is not suitable for under 16’s.
I’d been at Coiledspring for a month when I was handed this game with some roughly translated rules and asked to learn it. I’ve not put it down since and it’s now my favourite game we distribute! It also helps that I am currently undefeated in the office…
In Ganz Schon Clever, you’re working to fill in as much as the grid as possible, to score the most points. Each colour works slightly differently – for example in the blue grid, you always have to combine it with the white die, which makes getting low numbers tricky!
What I love about Ganz is that when you can build up the combos, one turn can trigger multiple effects. And then of course, once you have mastered Ganz, you have to try Doppelt so Clever…
Kingdomino is part of our Hero range for many reasons, and not just because it is one of my favourites. Winning the Spiel des Jahres in 2017, the game has gone from strength to strength. It now has multiple expansions and spin offs (Kingdomino Age of Giants, Kingdomino Court Expansion Print and Play, Queendomino), as well as its own roll and write – Kingdomino Duel. Can you tell I like roll and writes?
I love bringing this game to the table and introducing people to gaming with Kingdomino. The rules are simple and it’s great watching the strategy evolve. If you like dominoes, you’ll love Kingdomino – simply match squares in your kingdom and collect crowns to score.
I’m looking forward to the release of Kingdomino Origins – which takes Kingdomino back to the prehistoric era! Watch out for this one, due to release in October, it will make the perfect Christmas present for Kingdomino fans!
If you have tried any of these games or puzzles before, let us know on social media!
